Why have AT?
What is Active Transportation (AT)?
- AT is a relatively new term used throughout the world as a way to get to a destination such as work, school, store or to visit a friend
- It uses human-powered transportation such as walking, cycling, wheeling, in-line skating, using a wheelchair or scooter, snowshoeing etc, rather than using vehicles
- People of all ages and abilities are more likely to use vehicles less often if pathways are attractive and easy to use, clean, lit at night, cleared of snow, have benches for resting, and bike racks readily available
- AT focuses on getting from point A to point B. But using the same pathways for recreation and fitness is a bonus!
Why is Active Transportation important?
We want to make Beausejour a vibrant, resilient community with clean air, healthy citizens, and a safe, accessible, convenient, interconnected active transportation system. AT benefits for individuals and the community include:
- overall health
- Reducing health risk and stress
- Reducing pollution
- Saving money on motor vehicle costs
- Increasing tourism
- Making the town a desirable place to live, work and play.
What is the role of the Beausejour Active Transportation Committee In the Town of Beausejour?
- As a formal committee of Council, we want to make walking and wheeling so safe, convenient and fun, that all people choose clean, active modes of travel and recreation during all seasons
- We plan, coordinate and provide recommendations to Town Council for an overall Active Transportation system that encourages walking, cycling, rollerblading etc, to get from point A to B, rather than using motor vehicles.
- We promote the benefits of active transportation
